ATLS Chairman of Saudi Arabian Chapter in the propagation of the Advanced Trauma Life Support
(ATLS®
) Program for doctors in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (Riyadh, Abha, Al Qassim, Dhahran,
Jeddah, Medina, Taif, Hafer Al Batin, Gizan, Makkah, Al Baha, Tabuk, Qunfudah, Al Baha, Al Khobar,
Hofuf, Wadi Al Dawasir, Najran), and in the Gulf States (Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait). The ATLS Program is
now established in more than 30 sites within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States. ATLS
program is now a mandatory course for all surgeons, emergency physicians, residents and interns.
Medical Director PHTLS Program, Saudi Arabian Chapter in the propagation of the Pre Hospital Trauma
Life Support (PHTLS) Program which has been designed for all Allied Healthcare Professionals. The
course was initiated in Riyadh and has been spread out in at least 6 cities in the Kingdom. PHTLS
program is now a mandatory training program for all paramedics, EMTs and technicians.
Medical Director, ATCN Program, Saudi Arabian Chapter in the propagation of the Advanced Trauma
Life Support Course (ATCN) which has been designed for Nurses. The course was initiated in Riyadh
and had introduced to different cities in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait. So far this program
is actively running in the Middle East.
Regional Director and Principle Investigator for the Advanced Operative Management Course (ATOM)
which has been designed for surgeons. Assisted Qatar and UAE at establishing the course in the
country. The Regional Director is responsible for the quality assurance and content of the course in
the region.
Chair, ACS-COT, International Injury Care Committee – The I2C2 Chair position is an executive
committee appointment that would run for an initial 2 year term, concluding in 2021. Its major focus
is in the strategic planning to the tremendous growth of the educational programs as well as
opportunities to support trauma system.
Member – American College of Surgeons, Committee On Trauma – the mission of the Committee On
Trauma is to improve all phases of the management of the injured patient including pre-hospital care
and transportation, hospital care, and rehabilitation; to prevent injuries in the home, in industry, on
the highway, and during participation in sports; to establish and implement institutional and systems
standards for care of the injured; to provide education to improve trauma care; and to cooperate with
other national organizational with similar objectives.
Former Region Chief XVII (MENA) – actively participating in all related trauma courses activities
accredited by the American College of Surgeons such as in-charge of the site visits, promulgation and
initiation process until a center becomes fully independent. Has helped Middle East countries i.e.
Lebanon, Iran, Syria, Egypt, Jordan, Libya, Nigeria, Oman establish trauma programs in their countries.
Act as representative of the American College of Surgeons, Committee on Trauma to represent their
office to manages all trauma activities within the MENA Region.
He is an assistant professor in Surgery at Jazan University, the General Surgery Residency
Program Director in the Jazan Region, and the Clinical Simulation & Life Support Center director
at Jazan University. He is also the Trauma Pathway Lead & the Cluster Trauma Medical Director
for Jazan Region as part of the national initiative to achieve the 2030 vision. He finished his
surgical residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). He completed a 2-year Trauma,
Acute Care Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital,
Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA, USA.
He worked closely with Dr. David King at Massachusetts General Hospital Animal Lab both
clinically and research-wise, collaborating on industry and Department of Defense (DOD) funded
projects as well as more typical academic efforts and innovations, including SurgiBox, Gel-e:
Sprayable “Reversible” Foam Hemostat for Treatment of Non-Compressible Hemorrhage. His
passion is to work closely with colleagues on Trauma System development, improve pre-hospital
delivery of care, outreached injury prevention, surgical education, and developing tools to measure
surgical capacity

Professor Aayed Alqahtani is currently a professor and a consultant of MIS and
Obesity Surgery and the CEO of New You Medical Center. He is the Director of King
Saud’s University’s Obesity Chair and one of the prominent bariatric surgeons
worldwide. Prof. Alqahtani is the Past President of The International Pediatric
Endoscopy Group (IPEG); Founder & Past President of its Middle East Chapter. Past
President of Pan Arab Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (PASMBS). He is the
Director of International Bariatric Club (IBC) Middle East & Africa.
He received his medical education with honors from King Saud University, Riyadh.
He did post graduate training in McGill University, obtained his fellowship (FRCSC) in
general surgery from the Royal College of Physician & Surgeon of Canada and the
American Board of General Surgery (FACS) with specialized training in minimally
invasive surgery at McGill University Canada and Denver, USA. He was featured on
the Dean’s Honors List of Excellent Results in Postdoctoral Training in University of
Montreal.
Prof. Alqahtani is a strong advocate of providing weight loss surgery for adult and
severely obese children and adolescents, and has published numerous studies on the
safety and efficacy of this solution in young age groups. Notably, recent publications
authored by Prof. Alqahtani demonstrate that bariatric surgery does not alter the
growth of young children.
He has published many articles, chapters and books. He has been the guest speakers
in more than 300 international events and over 200 peer-reviewed presentations at
national and international meetings. He is faculty of many national and international
training courses and workshop in MIS, Robotic and Obesity. He is very active in
numerous national and international societies, and he is a reviewer and sits on
the editorial board of many respected medical journals.
